The Express Entry System

The Express Entry System is an online program that you can use to get permanent residence in Canada. It was initiated in 2015 in a bid to speed up the Canadian immigration process and make it easy for immigrants to apply for residence and work in Canada.Advertisements

In this system you will create an online profile and meet the following criteria below:

  • Work experience or training
  • Age
  • Language fluency test results in English or French
  • Education
  • Provincial nomination (not necessary)

Having a job offer is not really necessary in applying through the Express Entry System although it will increase your chances of being successful through this program. Once you start your profile, you will have to complete it within 60days. After completing the profile, you will be placed in an Express Entry pool draw with other applicants where you will be ranked against a cut-off score using a ranking system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

A score will be given to you based on the requirements you have filled in your online profile and this score will be based on points with the maximum points to be 1200points. The CRS cut-off score can be around 700-800points and you will be expected to meet or exceed the cut-off score for you to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada.

With the Express Entry System, you still have the opportunity to work and improve your CRS score for the next draw as the draws are done twice in a month. You can improve your CRS score by getting more work experience, securing a job offer, including your spouse or partner or having a family member in Canada.

There are three federal immigration streams under the Express Entry System and they are:

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

Applying through any of the programs listed above and meeting the requirements of the program means you will be getting a permanent residence if accepted or selected.

Provincial Nomination Program

This program is designed for the provinces in Canada and it is tailored at meeting the labour requirements for the provinces in Canada. It is a program for provinces in Canada to nominate immigrants to the province. It is designed by the Canadian government through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in partnership with the provincial government to help foreigners find work and settle in a particular province.

Each province in Canada is in charge of its own nomination and sets requirements for every candidate that want to come through the province nomination program. For you to get a nomination in any of the provinces in Canada, you will have to apply for an occupation that is in-demand in the province and receive a job offer from an employee in Canada.

This nomination by the province will have to be approved by the Canadian government and also your application for you to be able to get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada.

There are thirteen provinces in Canada but only eleven of these provinces have Provincial Nomination Program and these provinces are:

  • Alberta
  • British Columbia
  • Manitoba
  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland & Labrador
  • Northwest Territories
  • Nova Scotia
  • Ontario
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Saskatchewan
  • Yukon

These provinces have immigration streams under the Provincial Nomination Program. You can apply for permanent residence in Canada through the PNPs and this could be through the direct application process or the Express Entry linked to PNP.

  • Direct Application Process

If you are applying through this process, you will have to apply by paper and submit your application through a mail or courier service. After this, you will have to wait for about 15 to 19months for your application result.

  • Express Entry Application Process

Another application process under the PNP is the Express Entry linked to PNP. This is pretty quicker than the direct application and you will just have to wait for about 6 to 8 months for your application result. It could be either by expression of interest or the Provincial Nominee Express Entry Stream.

For the Expression of interest, you are showing interest in a particular province when creating your profile online in the Express Entry System and this will allow the province to select your profile from the Entry draw pool directly. You will definitely have an edge here.

For the Provincial Nominee Express Entry Stream, you will be applying for an occupation in-demand in the province.

The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program

The AIP is a pathway to get permanent residence for foreign skilled workers and international graduates who want to work and live in the Atlantic provinces of Canada. It is a program by the Canadian government in cooperation with the Atlantic Provinces to hire skilled workers to fill up labour shortages that they couldn’t fill up locally. For you to be eligible for this program, you must have a valid job offer from an employer in one of the four Atlantic Provinces which are Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador.

Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot

This is a program designed to help the smaller communities in Canada strengthen their economies and so it allows foreigners to apply for jobs posted by employers in Canada who are part of the participating communities. Through this program, successful applicants can get permanent residence to live and work in Canada.

One interesting thing about this program is that as a foreigner, you become aware of the jobs that are in demand in Canada and also the community where the jobs are available. So through this, you get to know the best jobs in Canada and where to find them.

Working in these communities will help you to save cost as they basically have a low cost of living unlike the urban areas and also since there are no much competition for jobs in the part of Canada, there will be high demand for labour and also the employers will be willing to pay higher salaries or wages.

There are about five participating provinces with eleven participating communities in the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot and we will be looking at them shortly.

Family Sponsorship

This is one program that allows a citizen of Canada or a permanent resident of Canada to sponsor their family members. You can actually go through this program if you have someone in Canada that is either a citizen or permanent resident.

You’re eligible to sponsor someone to immigrate to Canada if:

  • You’re 18 years and older
  • You‘re a Canadian, person registered under the Canadian Indian Act or permanent resident of Canada
  • You can prove that you aren’t receiving social assistance unless it’s for a disability
  • You can provide for the basic and essential needs of whoever you intend sponsoring.

If you are eligible, you may sponsor the following family members:

  • Your  spouse
  • Common-law partner
  • Your conjugal partner
  • Your dependent children.

A major benefit of receiving a sponsorship is that you are able to move to Canada as a permanent resident and you don’t really need a job offer to immigrate.
