Types of Temporary Resident Visa

Like we said earlier that there are two types of Temporary Visas in can and they are:

  • Single Entry Visa
  • Multiple Entry Visa
  • Single Entry Visa

When you are given a single entry visa to Canada, it means you can only be allowed to enter Canada only one and after which, you will need to apply for another visa if you want to enter the country again.

On arriving Canada, there will be a Canadian officer of the Canadian Border Services Agency who will make sure you meet the requirements for you to gain entry into Canada and once you have been approved by the officer, you will be authorized to stay and either your passport is stamped or you will be given an extra document to carry during your stay in Canada.

But if you don’t receive a stamp or an extra document to support your stay in the country then you Temporary Resident Visa will expire six months after the day you entered Canada.

There are some cases where you may leave Canada during this period of your authorized stay and since it is a single entry visa, you will have to get a new Visitors’ visa to enter Canada again except if you visit the United States then you can return to Canada without getting a new visitors’ visa and there are some conditions for this:

  • You must have a valid visitor record, a work permit or study permit
  • You must return to Canada within your initial authorization period given to you by the immigration officer.

When do you need a Temporary Resident Visa?

We are going to be looking at the situations when you will need a Temporary Resident Visa.

  • When you wish to study in Canada, you will need a study permit or temporary visa for the duration of your study program
  • When you wish to work in Canada especially when it is a temporary job; you will need a work permit or temporary visa
  • When you plan to visit Canada for a certain period of time.
  • Multiple Entry Visa

As the name implies, you will know that it is quite different from the former we mentioned. With this visa, you can enter into Canada several times depending in the period that the visa is valid. This type of temporary visa can be valid for a maximum of 10years. So for someone that wants to travel between Canada and other countries, then the multiple entry visa is the best option for you.

If your visa is approved, you will be able to enter and leave Canada as much as you can but it must be within the period of the validity of your visa. You might not receive a multiple visa if the expiry date on your visa falls after the expiry date of your passport and if this happens, you will need to get a new passport before applying for your visa.

What is an eTA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization is a document that you receive when you enter Canada while living in a country that falls under the visa-exempt nationals list. The visa-exempt nationals are people that fall under the countries that can move to Canada without obtaining a visa. With this document, you can visit Canada multiple times for a period of six months and you should know that this document is valid for a period of five years or until your passport expires.

Having this document doesn’t really mean that you will enter into Canada as this will be decided by the border services officer.

How do you apply for an eTA?

This is a very simple process and the joy of this is that you can actually apply online. You will just have to meet some requirements in completing the eTA form and these requirements are:

  • A valid email address
  • A valid passport from a visa-exempt country
  • A credit or debit card

You should know that:

Starting your application means you must finish it because you cannot do this another time; everything must be done at once. If the application has been submitted, you will receive an approved email within few minutes and this email contains your eTA number.

In some cases, you might have to submit more document before your application can be approved and if this is your case, an email containing instructions on what to do will be sent to you within 72hours. A family looking for eTA must apply per family member.
